Starting The Second Week

10th-grade classes are exploding simplistic ideas of culture, starting to wrap their heads around the ever-changing nature of their own identities. Soon, we start to read that troublesome tale of Conrad's, "Heart of Darkness."

11th-grade classes are well on their way to deconstructing hegemonic structures of American identity. For this class, our novel will be Sinclair's tragic The Jungle.

All the while, both these grade levels are getting to explore some amazing spoken-word performances by youth with Brave New Voices and Split This Rock.

The 12th-grade AP class is mastering vocabulary and tackling Eliot's "The Wasteland" with a new-found confidence. After tackling that modernist icon, we'll be reading Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale.

As for me, I'm struggling with Derrida's "sacrificial structure." I feel like I'm plodding, circularly through this section of my dissertation. I need to wrap it up and move on to Haraway.
