Seniors started to build a deeper understanding of literary movements and eras. With Modernism and Post-Modernism covered, we are considering the role Feminist Theory and Criticism plays in the context of Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale. I have been pleasantly surprised to find that the film version of it, I think produced by Hulu, is quite faithful to the book. We have used a couple of scenes to help us visualize what is going on in that patriarchal land of Gilead.

Juniors got to work their way through the tough initial descriptions of Chicago abattoirs in Sinclair's The Jungle. It's clear the author wants us to focus on how the hogs and cattle might be metaphors for the workers, but we can't stop thinking about all the animals brutally killed. After our reading, we dove into the research for our next big paper. We are trying to find interesting critiques or contributions to the idea of "America" and "The American Dream."
