English Teacher Fail
I have worked hard to teach my son the joys of reading, writing, and the language arts in general. We read Harry Potter, work on handwriting, and he is constantly reading a variety of books. So, I realized pretty quickly how I missed a fundamental skill this morning when he looked at the large dictionary sitting on my desk and asked, "how do you find the word you want in there?" I told him it was because they were alphabetized, but realized immediately just how naturalized the digital technologies are for him and his life. "Why don't you just google your guess," he asked me. To which I could only answer that it was because I liked the paper-version better. Perhaps, it's time to get him a paper-based dictionary?
Seniors, I hope you are enjoying Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale. It is one of my favorite books and I am eager to see if you find it relevant to our contemporary issues. Don't forget, you need to have read up through Chapter 30 by our next class period. Also, remember to submit a quote analysis here for each chapter.
Juniors, you got to enjoy a day of amnesty. Please make the most of this opportunity to make-up any late or missing work. We'll be diving back in to the The Jungle by Upton Sinclair and the related questions of the American Dream during our next class session.
