Second Day, Upcoming Novels
With the second day a wrap, I got a good sense of what the year has in store. More importantly, I have managed to figure out what novels each class is going to start off with for the year.
The 10th graders get to start the year with that classic of racist proportions, Heart of Darkness. My Hope is that we'll be able to really get critical with it.
11th grade, dealing as it is with the topic of "America", is going to begin the year with Upton Sinclair's The Jungle. I'm always eager to re-engage with a book that so brutally explores the long tradition of exploitation in this country.
12th grade AP students are going to start the year off with The Handmaid's Tale. I recognize it's a bit predictable, yet it feels like such an important text for the current times.
Tomorrow, we start really diving into the work.
