Poetry as Protest
I'm planning out the remaining units for my year at San Diego High School. Up first is a unit on To Kill a Mockingbird. I love teaching that era's literature, including drawing student attention to some of the criticisms of the famous book. For the following unit, we will get to focus on poetry, and one of the text I have selected to help me plan a little better and think a little deeper is titled Rhythm and Resistance: Teaching Poetry for Social Justice. I'm eager to dig into it and see what it has to offer. The kids seem hungry these days to be heard, to be recognized, to be effective.
