It perplexes me that we continually look toward heaven, the afterlife, or some other transcendental being to draw out and validate our sense compassion. Why is it not enough to simply wish others (creatures of myriad forms) be free from pain and suffering?

I used to think such impulses naive or lacking in some kind of rigor, be it intellectual or spiritual. I am increasingly less inclined to feel that compassion needs any sort of justification or defense.
