Coffee (my precious)
I have been reading a lot of speculative, dystopian fiction lately like Margaret Atwood, Octavia E. Butler, Marge Piercy, and Ursula K. Le Guinn. There is a lot of very interesting common threads amongst these works but there is one very clear, common concern: coffee. In the horrible, apocalyptic future of environmental collapse and posthuman transformation, coffee will be both rare (probably non-existent) and sorely missed by the remaining few. People will languish over its absence more than just about any other culinary or cultural habit. As a self-professed amateur coffee connoisseur, I share this deep anxiety about any future where coffee and its attendant pleasures are in peril.
